“Stupid Mistake” – John Obi Mikel Slams Nicolas Jackson After Chelsea Red Card Shocker
Chelsea legend John Obi Mikel blasts Nicolas Jackson for letting the team down again, saying competition is no excuse for reckless behaviour on the pitch.
Former Chelsea star John Obi Mikel didn’t hold back in his assessment of Nicolas Jackson’s actions during Chelsea’s Club World Cup match — calling the striker’s red card “stupid” and “unbelievable.”
Chelsea beat LAFC 2-0 to open their Club World Cup campaign with a win, but the result was overshadowed by Jackson’s late sending off. The Senegalese striker, who started on the bench behind new signing Liam Delap, was shown a red card just minutes after coming on — leaving his teammates to finish the match a man down.
Speaking as a pundit after the game, Mikel made his feelings crystal clear.
“Unbelievable. Stupid, stupid, stupid mistake,” Mikel said, shaking his head. “I don’t know what was going through his head. Your team needs you, and he does that. He did the same thing at Newcastle… you can’t keep making these mistakes.”
The ex-midfielder, who won multiple trophies with the Blues, didn’t just criticise the foul — he also called out Jackson’s attitude.
“I don’t care what his frustration is,” Mikel added, referring to Delap getting the nod to start. “This is a massive football club and it’s about competition. If you’re angry or p*ssed off, then you have to embrace it. We need competition.”
Jackson has had a mixed spell since arriving at Stamford Bridge. While he’s shown flashes of talent and scored some important goals, questions remain about his consistency and temperament. His red card — reportedly for a reckless challenge — is the latest in a series of frustrating moments for the 23-year-old forward.
Delap, meanwhile, impressed during his full debut, grabbing an assist and showing good link-up play. Manager Enzo Maresca has spoken highly of the young striker and is likely to continue giving him opportunities, especially if Jackson struggles to stay focused.
Chelsea will now be without Jackson for the next group stage match against Flamengo. The Blues currently top Group D but will need to avoid further distractions if they are to challenge for the title.
