"I was trying to Calm him down" – Luis Enrique Reveals Reason for angry Joao Pedro clash after Chelsea shock PSG in Club World Cup final

Luis Enrique has broken his silence after a fiery incident involving Chelsea forward Joao Pedro at the end of Paris Saint-Germain’s (PSG) 3-0 defeat in the Club World Cup final.

The match, played in New Jersey on Sunday night, saw Chelsea stun the European champions with three first-half goals — two from Cole Palmer and another from Joao Pedro. The shock result handed Enzo Maresca’s team the trophy and left PSG frustrated.

But the biggest talking point came after the final whistle, when tempers flared between the two teams at the MetLife Stadium.

TV cameras captured a moment where Enrique appeared to shove Joao Pedro in the face and neck during a heated exchange. The confrontation began between Chelsea’s Andrey Santos and PSG defender Nuno Mendes, before escalating. Enrique, along with PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, became involved, and Pedro was seen falling to the ground as players from both sides rushed in.

FIFA is now expected to review the footage, and Enrique could face disciplinary action.

However, the PSG boss insists his actions were misunderstood. Speaking after the game, Enrique explained that he was trying to calm things down rather than make them worse.

“I have no problem expressing my feelings at the end of a high-pressure game,” Enrique said. “It’s a stressful environment for everyone involved, and sometimes these things happen. But my only intention was to stop things from getting worse.”

He added: “I saw Maresca, and others were getting involved, so I stepped in to separate players. The situation wasn’t ideal, but it was a result of the emotions of the match. I wasn’t trying to hurt anyone — I just didn’t want it to get out of control.”

PSG were already down to 10 men after midfielder Joao Neves was sent off late in the match for pulling Marc Cucurella’s hair — another sign of rising tensions throughout the game.

The drama unfolded as Chelsea celebrated their stunning win in front of U.S. President Donald Trump, who was in attendance to witness the Premier League side lift the trophy.

While the result was a major win for Maresca’s Chelsea, the post-match clash has taken much of the spotlight — and FIFA will now decide if Enrique crossed a line.
