Manchester United Step Up Pursuit of Bryan Mbeumo with Fresh £70m Bid – Spurs Left Behind as Forward Eyes Old Trafford Move

Manchester United have moved a step closer to landing Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo after making a fresh and improved offer worth £70 million. According to reports, the new proposal includes £65 million upfront and an additional £5 million in add-ons, as the Red Devils step up their summer rebuild under new manager Ruben Amorim.

The Athletic previously revealed that Mbeumo, 25, had already informed both Brentford and Tottenham Hotspur of his desire to join Manchester United if a move was to happen this summer. That message has been echoed throughout negotiations, and it appears United are determined to get their man.

Their latest bid comes after two earlier offers were turned down. The first was worth £45 million plus £10 million in performance-based bonuses. A second improved bid – £55 million with £7.5 million in add-ons – was also rejected. Brentford, however, are believed to be holding out for a deal that exceeds the £62.5 million United paid for Wolves forward Matheus Cunha earlier this summer.

But with Mbeumo entering the final year of his current contract – though Brentford do have the option to extend it by another 12 months – the West London club may now feel pressure to accept the latest offer.

Bryan Mbeumo had a fantastic 2024/25 Premier League season, scoring 20 goals and providing eight assists as Brentford secured a top-half finish. The Cameroon international has become one of the most reliable forwards in the league, combining pace, strength, and sharp decision-making in front of goal.

He joined Brentford in 2019 from French side Troyes and quickly developed into a Premier League-level talent. Over the years, he’s grown into a leader in the Brentford attack and has caught the attention of top clubs across Europe.

Ruben Amorim, United’s new head coach, is looking for versatile attacking players who can thrive in different formations, and Mbeumo fits that description perfectly.

According to football writer Carl Anka, Mbeumo “is a good player and should fit whatever style of football Ruben Amorim wants to play next season at Manchester United.”

Mbeumo’s playing style makes him a great option for Amorim’s system. He has played in different roles at Brentford – including as a winger in a 4-3-3 setup, as a wide forward in a 4-2-3-1, and as a second striker in a 3-5-2 formation.

He is direct in attack, naturally left-footed but confident using his right, and dangerous when running into space. His ability to cut inside or stay wide gives United more variety in the final third – something they have lacked at times in recent seasons.

Analysts say Mbeumo could be especially effective in Amorim’s favoured 3-4-3 formation, playing as the right-sided attacker just behind the central striker. His experience in the Premier League also means he won’t need a long adjustment period, unlike players coming in from other leagues.

“Mbeumo’s versatility is alluring,” Anka explains, “but his best fit would be as the right-sided No. 10 in Amorim’s 3-4-3. He helps provide additional angles of attack, making the team less one-dimensional.”

Tottenham Hotspur were also keen on signing Mbeumo this summer, especially after hiring former Brentford boss Thomas Frank as their new head coach. Mbeumo worked closely with Frank at Brentford and was expected to be a top transfer target for Spurs.

But the forward has made it clear that if he’s to leave Brentford, it will only be for Old Trafford. That decision may have dealt a blow to Tottenham’s hopes, as they continue searching for attacking reinforcements.

Brentford have yet to respond to United’s latest bid, but with talks ongoing and the player pushing for the move, there’s growing optimism at United that a deal can be done soon.

If Brentford accept the offer, Mbeumo could become United’s next major signing in a summer that’s expected to be full of changes under Amorim’s leadership. His arrival would add serious firepower to United’s attack and help fill the void left by underperforming wide players last season.
