Maresca reveals heat was behind Chalobah’s early exit against AC Milan and shares encouraging news on Fofana’s return.

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has shed light on Trevoh Chalobah’s early substitution in the pre-season clash against AC Milan, reassuring fans that the decision was not injury-related but simply down to the sweltering conditions.

Chalobah, who started the match, was withdrawn during the second half, prompting concern among supporters who feared yet another injury setback for the 25-year-old. However, Maresca moved quickly to ease those worries. Speaking after the game, the Italian coach explained with a smile:

“Trev is fine; he decided to come off because it was too hot (laughs),” Maresca told Channel 5 Sport.

The light-hearted comment reflects the club’s cautious approach to player fitness during pre-season, especially given Chelsea’s long injury list last season. Chalobah himself endured spells on the sidelines last term, so protecting him in a high-intensity friendly made sense.

A Positive Update on Wesley Fofana

The good news didn’t stop there. Maresca also offered a promising update on Wesley Fofana, the French centre-back who has been out for an extended period due to a serious knee injury.

“Fofana could be available for Crystal Palace, yes, and we are very happy because he is a very important player,” Maresca revealed.

If Fofana does return in time for the clash with Palace, it will be a huge boost for Chelsea’s defensive options. His pace, reading of the game, and ability to play out from the back make him a natural fit for Maresca’s tactical plans.

Managing the Heat and the Squad

Chelsea’s pre-season has been played in challenging conditions, with temperatures pushing players to their physical limits. Maresca has been rotating his squad heavily, ensuring fitness is built up gradually to avoid unnecessary injuries before the Premier League campaign kicks off.

For Chalobah, the decision to step off the pitch early is a small but sensible reminder of the importance of pacing preparations. His versatility — being able to play at centre-back or right-back — makes him a valuable asset, and Maresca will want him fully fit for the long season ahead.
