Enzo Maresca Reveals Why Joao Pedro Played Just Days After Chelsea Move

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has explained why he handed Joao Pedro his debut so soon after the Brazilian’s arrival from Brighton, describing the 22-year-old as “sharp” and ready to contribute despite only recently joining the squad.

Pedro, who officially became a Chelsea player just days before their Club World Cup quarterfinal clash against Palmeiras, was a surprise inclusion off the bench in the second half of the match. With Liam Delap suspended for the semifinal against Fluminense, many wondered if Pedro was being eased in early to prepare for a more central role — and Maresca has now confirmed exactly that.

“Since he arrived, even though he had just come back from holiday, he looked sharp, he looked good,” Maresca told reporters after the 2-0 win. “That’s why we gave him some minutes. I think he came on just before they scored — and I think after Joao and Noni [Madueke] came on, we were much better.”

Pedro was brought on late in the match, and while he didn’t get on the scoresheet, his movement and energy added a fresh dynamic to Chelsea’s attacking play. His presence helped stretch Palmeiras’ backline and allowed more space for players like Cole Palmer to operate. The Blues eventually secured the win through Palmer’s opener and a late own goal by Argentine full-back Agustin Giay.

Pedro, who scored nine goals and added four assists for Brighton across all competitions last season, arrives at Stamford Bridge with high expectations. His £60 million move makes him one of Chelsea’s most expensive signings of the summer, and Maresca made it clear that the decision to sign him wasn’t just for depth.

“We knew him very well before he came. The reason he’s here is because we like him,” Maresca added. “And we’re sure he’s going to help us.”

The former Watford forward’s versatility — being able to play as a central striker, second forward, or even wide in a front three — gives Chelsea some much-needed flexibility as they push deeper into the tournament.

With Liam Delap suspended for the next round, Pedro is widely expected to start against Fluminense in the semifinals. It’s a big stage for a new signing, but Maresca appears confident that the young Brazilian is ready for the spotlight.

“Joao brings something different — he’s technical, clever, and has good instincts near goal,” one Chelsea assistant told The Athletic on condition of anonymity. “He’s only going to get better once he builds chemistry with the rest of the squad.”

Chelsea face Fluminense on Tuesday 8th July, and all eyes will be on Pedro if he gets the nod. His early performance could define not just the Club World Cup campaign, but how quickly he settles into Maresca’s long-term plans at Stamford Bridge.
