Joe Cole blasts Chelsea’s transfer strategy and says Trevoh Chalobah is the club’s best defender after starring in win over Everton.

"He's our best....And he's getting better" – Joe Cole Hails Star as Chelsea’s Best and Slams Transfer Decisions
Chelsea secured an important win over Everton on Saturday afternoon, but former Blues winger Joe Cole used the occasion to point out bigger issues at the club — especially regarding their transfer decisions in recent seasons.

Nicolas Jackson ended his long goal drought with a brilliant first-half strike, giving Chelsea a much-needed 1-0 victory at Stamford Bridge. However, it was far from a smooth performance. Goalkeeper Robert Sanchez had to make some huge saves in the second half to make sure Chelsea held on to all three points.

Another standout performer was defender Trevoh Chalobah. The academy graduate was solid throughout the game and made a strong case for being man of the match. Chalobah’s journey this season has been complicated — Chelsea loaned him out in the summer before recalling him in the winter, a decision head coach Enzo Maresca defended. But Joe Cole strongly disagrees.

Speaking on TNT Sports, Cole didn’t hold back, calling it a “crime” that Chelsea even considered letting Chalobah go.

“He’s been impressive since he walked back in the door,” Cole said. “When you look at the central defenders Chelsea have let go — Marc Guehi, Fikayo Tomori, Chalobah — and the money spent on players like Badiashile, Fofana, and Koulibaly, you have to wonder how that’s going to play out over the next few years.”

Joe Cole went even further, saying, “I still think Trevoh Chalobah’s our best central defender, and he’s getting better and better. He understands the club. It was a crime to let him leave. He’s been brilliant today and he’s constantly improving.”

Cole’s comments add to growing frustration from fans and former players who believe Chelsea’s owners have made poor decisions when it comes to building the squad. Letting go of young, talented players who know the club’s culture — like Chalobah, Tomori, and Guehi — while spending heavily on new signings who haven’t always delivered, continues be a matter of debate.

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand said, “You’re supposed to build your team around academy players who know the club inside out. Chelsea have lost that.”

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher also said, “They’re spending hundreds of millions, but letting go of the players you actually need — young, hungry players who fans can connect with.”

Even though Chelsea have spent a lot of money on big signings, many of the new players haven’t performed well, and fans are still unhappy with how things are going at the club.

In Trevoh Chalobah, Chelsea may already have the defensive leader they’ve been searching for — and Joe Cole’s strong words will only make the fans appreciate the academy graduate even more.

As Chelsea continue their late fight for European qualification, keeping Chalobah fit and in form might be one of the best moves they make this season — and this time, no one at Stamford Bridge will want to let him slip away.
