"He's Still Learning Our System" – Maresca Explains Why Andrey Santos Struggled Against ES Tunis

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has explained why young midfielder Andrey Santos failed to make an impact during the Blues’ Club World Cup group-stage clash against ES Tunis.

The 20-year-old, who is considered a future star for Chelsea, looked off the pace in a tough 0-0 draw that saw the Blues scrape through the group stage. While fans were quick to point fingers, Maresca has provided clarity on the situation.

Speaking after the match, Maresca admitted that Santos is still adjusting to Chelsea’s playing style and that time and patience are needed.

“He’s working well,” Maresca said, “but he needs to understand how we play. It’s the same for all of the new ones. It’s important for them to continue in the way they are working to get opportunities.”

Chelsea had a difficult evening in Philadelphia, due to the intense heat and excessive humidity which made everything worse. To Santos, however, the problem was more tactical rather than physical.

Maresca’s system relies heavily on understanding positional play and quick decision-making in tight spaces. Santos, who recently joined Chelsea and has had limited minutes in Maresca’s setup, seemed unsure in the match, struggling to link up with the midfield and keep up with the tempo.

His display raised concerns, especially considering the club’s ongoing search for midfield reinforcements and the fans’ high expectations for the Brazilian starlet.

But Maresca remains confident that Santos can grow into the role if given time and continues to put in the effort.

“He just needs to keep working. These things take time,” the Chelsea boss added.

With the knockout stages looming, it remains to be seen whether Santos will get another chance soon, or if Maresca will turn to more experienced options in midfield.
