“I’m Sorry”—Joao Pedro Apologises to Fluminense After Scoring Twice for Chelsea
The Brazilian striker refused to celebrate after scoring a brace against his former club, saying it was a bittersweet moment in his dream Chelsea debut.
Joao Pedro has described scoring his first goals for Chelsea as a “dream come true” after netting twice in the Blues’ 3-0 win over Fluminense to reach the Club World Cup final.
The Brazilian forward, who only joined Chelsea last week in a £60 million move from Brighton, wasted no time in making his mark on the big stage. With Liam Delap suspended for the semi-final clash, manager Enzo Maresca chose to start Joao Pedro up front — and the decision paid off brilliantly.
Pedro scored two goals on his full debut, showing confidence, quick feet, and sharp finishing as Chelsea comfortably booked their place in Sunday’s final, where they’ll face either Paris Saint-Germain or Real Madrid.
But despite the personal joy, the 23-year-old remained humble — and respectful. His goals came against Fluminense, the very club where his professional career began. Pedro made 36 senior appearances for the Brazilian side before leaving for Watford in 2020.
Out of respect for his former team, Pedro didn’t celebrate either goal, keeping his emotions in check. Speaking to DAZN after the match, he explained why.
“I am happy to score my first goal for Chelsea but also I know this tournament is very important for Fluminense,” he said.
“I can just say sorry, but I have to be professional. I play for Chelsea. They pay me to score goals and today I was happy to score.”
Pedro’s brace came at a crucial time for the Blues, who are aiming to lift the Club World Cup title for the second time in their history. The first goal was a clever finish after a smart one-two, while the second showed his awareness inside the box as he tapped in from close range.
The 23-year-old admitted the moment felt special and was one to remember.
“I think it was a dream. I don’t think it could have been better. Two goals. Now we need to think about the final. I am very happy to score two goals today.”
