Manchester United Issues Stern Ultimatum to Antony Amid Transfer Window Frustrations

Manchester United’s summer transfer window has been marked by significant squad reshaping, with several new arrivals aiming to bolster Erik ten Hag’s squad. However, while the club has been busy bringing in fresh talent, a number of fringe players are now being told they must find new clubs. One such player is Brazilian winger Antony, whose future at Old Trafford has become increasingly uncertain, with the club reportedly growing frustrated with how his transfer saga has unfolded.

Antony’s Struggle for Impact and Transfer Stalemate

Yet, from United’s perspective, this prolonged negotiation is far from ideal.

The Ultimatum: Time Running Out

According to Spanish outlet ABC, United have now issued a clear ultimatum to Antony: accept one of the multiple offers on the table, reportedly between £26 million and £35 million, before the start of the Premier League season or face being sidelined until January. This hardline stance signals United’s unwillingness to allow Antony to dictate his terms or delay a resolution further.

Being frozen out for the first half of the season could carry significant consequences for Antony, not least jeopardizing his chances of featuring at the 2026 World Cup. The winger, who is in the prime years of his career, will need regular playing time to remain in contention for international selection.

Context of the Transfer Saga

United’s frustration is compounded by the fact that Antony, alongside fellow winger Alejandro Garnacho, missed the club’s full pre-season preparations. Both players have been absent from the squad’s training and tours, instead keeping fit in isolation as their futures hang in the balance. This situation contrasts starkly with that of Marcus Rashford, who, despite failing to secure a move to Barcelona, was fully involved in United’s pre-season.

This “bomb squad” approach — placing players outside the core group — appears to be a deliberate tactic by United’s management to send a message to those out of favor. While some critics argue this approach might escalate tensions, others see it as a necessary step to maintain squad harmony and professionalism under Ten Hag.

Negotiations Remain Tense

Betis, on their end, are still reportedly keen to push for a loan deal that delays a permanent transfer commitment, leveraging the transfer window timeline to their advantage. United, however, are wary of appearing to limit Antony’s options to a single club and want to avoid setting a precedent that a player can hold the club hostage for an extended period.
