Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson has spoken openly about the criticism he has faced this season, insisting that he will prove his doubters wrong. The Scottish defender, who has been a key part of Liverpool’s success over the years, believes he has been unfairly singled out as a scapegoat.

Even if some people wonder if Robertson is aging, the 31-year-old is still committed to becoming Liverpool’s starting left-back. He is determined to keep proving his value to the team as the Reds progress toward their 20th league title.

In an interview with Walk On magazine, Robertson admitted that he has experienced more scrutiny this season than in previous years.

“A lot has probably been spoken about me this season, which is maybe something I haven’t quite experienced in my time here,” he said. “I’ve had seven years of going under the radar, but this season there has been more of a spotlight on me.”

Robertson understands that criticism is part of football, but he takes pride in having held the left-back position for eight years at a club like Liverpool.

“The fact is that I’ve been the starting left-back for Liverpool for eight years. I’m very proud of that. It’s not easy to do that at a club of this size when they can go out and sign anyone in the world,” he explained. “I want to still be the starting left-back, but you’ve got to take it on the chin. If people want to criticise you, then so be it.”

Robertson has started 24 of Liverpool’s 29 league games under Arne Slot, showing that he remains a key player. However, he acknowledges that some mistakes this season, like his red card against Fulham, have drawn extra attention.

“I do believe that football’s getting a bit like that, where people try to find scapegoats, and maybe it’s been my turn,” Robertson said. “But if it’s my turn, then it’s taken the spotlight off other players. I’ve seen it happen to players before, and I’ll see it happen to people in the future.”

Rather than letting the criticism bring him down, Robertson is using it as motivation.

“I just need to keep my head down and keep working hard. The manager and coaches are helping us all the time, and I believe I’m in a good moment right now. Maybe that isn’t getting any recognition, which is fine, but when you make one mistake, people jump on it. You just have to try to prove them wrong,” he added.

Despite the criticism, most Liverpool fans still appreciate Robertson’s contributions and experience. However, as he ages, the club is expected to plan for the future.
