Enzo Maresca Blames Chelsea Fans for Costly Mistake in Draw Against Ipswich

Enzo Maresca suggests Chelsea fans' frustration at Stamford Bridge caused his players to lose confidence, leading to a costly second goal against Ipswich.

"They made things difficult" – Enzo Maresca Blames Chelsea Fans After Disappointing 2-2 Draw with Ipswich
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has blamed the home crowd at Stamford Bridge for making things harder during their 2-2 draw with Ipswich Town. The disappointing result means Chelsea dropped important points in the race for a Champions League spot.

Ipswich, who are trying to avoid being relegated scored their second goal right after Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez kicked the ball long instead of passing it short from the back which is what the team usually does. Sanchez seemed to change the plan because fans were already getting frustrated with the slow build-up play. Ipswich quickly won the ball and scored through Ben Johnson leaving Chelsea shocked.

Chelsea did manage to come back and level the game 2-2, but they couldn’t find a winner. The draw means Chelsea have only picked up one point from two matches against Ipswich this season.

After the game, Maresca said:
“We lost some confidence after the first goal, and maybe the crowd made things more difficult. That was the moment to stay calm and stick to our usual style.”

He explained that the team usually builds up from the back with short passes, but they went long because the fans were unhappy. That change led to the second goal.
“We need to stay strong and keep playing our way,” he added.

This isn’t the first time Maresca has suggested that the home crowd could be more supportive.
“We are a better team when our fans are behind us,” he said.
“It’s their choice how they support, but when we’re struggling, the players on the pitch need even more help.”

Chelsea still have a chance to make the Europa League by winning the Conference League, but their main goal is to finish in the top five. To do that, they’ll need better results and more support from the fans.
