Wayne Rooney Sends Transfer Warning to Rúben Amorim as Manchester United Close in on Matheus Cunha
Rooney urges Manchester United to focus on building a strong team of young players instead of chasing superstar names, as the club targets Matheus Cunha this summer.
Manchester United are getting closer to signing Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha this summer, as new manager Rúben Amorim is looking to add more strength to his team.
United have struggled to score goals consistently this season. They’ve had to rely heavily on captain Bruno Fernandes, especially with Amad Diallo missing two months because of injury. Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Højlund have combined for just 18 goals, and only five United players have managed more than ten goal involvements. Marcus Rashford, who could be sold this summer, is one of them.
Because of this, Amorim wants to bring in players who fit his preferred 3-4-3 formation. Cunha is seen as a great option for the left attacking role.
United legend Wayne Rooney has spoken about the club’s summer transfer plans. He praised Cunha, saying he’s a top player, but he also warned Amorim not to repeat past mistakes.
Rooney said United must avoid signing “big-name” players just because of their reputation — like they did in the past with Paul Pogba, Romelu Lukaku, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Those three cost the club around £164 million in total but didn’t bring lasting success.
Speaking on The Overlap, Rooney said:
“I think there are a lot of players who are good enough for Manchester United. I think [Cunha] is a top player. In the past, United signed players with big ability and reputation who struggled.
United needs to build a strong team of players who can carry the club forward over the next two or three years, rather than chasing superstar names. Cunha isn’t a superstar yet, but that might actually be better for the team.”
Since Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS group took control of football decisions at United, the club’s transfer strategy has changed. Instead of buying expensive, famous players, they are now focused on signing younger talents with big potential.
Along with Cunha, United are also looking at Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap, who has a £30 million release clause. The idea is to sign good young players early, develop them, and build a strong team for the future.
So far, Amorim’s first two signings — Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu (20) and Ayden Heaven (18) — show exactly the type of player United are now targeting: young, talented, and full of potential to grow in the coming years.
